27 days. That’s how long I have left. 27 days before I get on five different planes and spend over twenty hours in the air. Trekking home will be a long journey in itself, but that journey will mark the end of this one: the ten month long journey of my stay in Thailand. I cannot believe it is almost over. It has truly been an amazing year. I’ve been to at least 45 different provinces (of the 77 in Thailand) and have made a new family here.
If you had asked me a week ago if I was ready to go home, I would’ve said yes. Hands down, I was ready. I still am ready to go, but not nearly as ready as I was back then. Something changed in me when I spent the day (and many of the days since) with my first host family. Recently, I have been in such a funk. I believe this has a lot to do with he fact that I’ve been bored. I no longer have school, and I spent a lot of time in my house laying around and watching TV on my laptop. My current family doesn’t have kids my age, so there isn’t someone to talk to and hang out with every day. I didn’t even realize that I was in such a bad funk until my mood changed. My spirit and mindset completely switched after spending the day with my first host family. They have a daughter, Ping Pong, who is my best friend in Thailand. Talking to her reminded me of how much fun I had with her and her family. When I lived with them, I was always on the run, doing some random project with my host sister and host cousin. Plus, I had school, so I got out of the house every day, whether I wanted to or not.
Don’t get me wrong, I like living with my current family, but the slump I was in made me forget how much fun I had the first half of my year as well. Spending time with my first family reminded of how much I truly will miss this country and all the amazing friends and family I’ve made here. It won’t be long until I don’t get to see my little host cousins get older and play with them every day, so I need to take advantage. Because even though it’s sad, it’s true that in 27 days, it’ll just be a memory.
